The Mint US offers a bewildering variety of medal defines each year, ranging from the old standby as proof Setup, and a set of Uncirculated (year), special commemorative coins and sets that have limited the mintages. Learn to those who typically rocket in value suffered, and those that are usually duds.Reply:The answer is in a nutshell, limited mintage sets that have a single currency in them which cannot be obtained in any other way are the sets that make the smartest buy. For example, series 3-Coin Twentieth Anniversary Silver Eagle that came out at the end of 2006 had a currency that could only be purchased as part of the set-L'Aquila silver reverse proof. This set has a mintage of 250,000 maximum set, and proof of reverse immediately doubled the value of the unit. January 2008, the set sells for about $ 400 in PR-68 (a low-end degree for the set.) The issue price was only $ 100.
A recent example of a set of mint not-so-great is the set of Bald Eagle 3 coins. This collection consists of three currencies Bald Eagle (gold, silver and coated) which can be purchased individually, however, so that the collection is unlikely to have a strong aftermarket value. After all, we can't buy US Mint set for packaging bella, we buy it for coins! And in the case of Bald Eagle, (like most set US Mint,) you pay a premium for that Nice packaging! The total cost of buying all three currencies separately priced pre-release is $ 344.85. The set of 3-coin costs $ 369.95. Therefore, you are paying an extra $ 25.10 for nice box and a slick brochures (if the set also has one!)
In my opinion, one of the values to set most neglected in recent history of the US Mint is the collection of fabulous botanical gardens. The set contains a 1997 Jefferson nickel Satin Finish with the mintmark P that may not be purchased in any other way. Mint for the set of botanical gardens was 25,000, so very rare al Jefferson, the key fact the botanical gardens of set a real winner. At the time of this writing, you can still buy these collections for the aftermarket for under $ 200!
So, next time you're thinking of buying a US Mint set, evaluate the bid and ask yourself: Is offering sets a currency which cannot be purchased in any other way?
Can buy coins in the set apart for a lower cost?
Is the whole package of gilt set, brochures, and other box is worth the extra cost of the set trappings? Remember that you are purchasing coins here, not mint packaging. Keep this in mind, and almost never go wrong when choosing which sets special buy!
